Students and staff from the College of West Anglia’s (CWA’s) Sports Campus came together with families and friends to celebrate their outstanding sporting and academic achievements from throughout the year.
College alumnus, Wayne Griffiths, hosted the evening, which saw over 30 award-winners crowned on the night in a number of categories, from individual sports recognition to overall team of the year, across a wide range of disciplines, including football, netball, rugby, basketball and golf.
Former student, Nathan Hudson, joined the faculty’s Hall of Fame. Nathan studied Sports Development and Coaching at CWA and now works with Alive West Norfolk as a Community Sports Coach in primary schools.
Nathan said, “When I started at CWA, I knew I wanted to work in sport, but didn’t know as what, so I did coaching. As part of the course, I organised a sports day at a local primary school. Afterwards, one of the pupils came up to me and said it was the best sports day they had ever had. This gave me so much confidence and I knew then sports coaching was for me.”
Nathan has cerebral palsy, yet he didn’t let his disability stop him. He runs Alive KL Ability Counts – a multi-sport programme for young people with a physical, mental or learning disability. Nathan’s motto is, “If you don’t let your disability be an excuse, then it shan’t be the reason you can’t do something”.
Programme Manager for Sport and Public Protective Services, Scott Leadley, reflected over another successful year. He said, “Students complete work placements as part of their course. We are proud to work with schools, where the students can practise the skills and knowledge they need for their career pathway. The Class of 2022 have achieved phenomenal success, either progressing to employment or university.”
